Day 311: Kia Ora!

Wat is het hier koud! Ik wist het van tevoren, had al met angst gekeken naar het weerbericht dat gewoonweg durft aan te geven dat het 6 tot 10 graden is in Christchurch. Slik, dat is minstens zo'n 20 graden kouder dan ik het afgelopen jaar heb gehad! Ik hoop maar dat ik genoeg laagjes kan dragen om warm te blijven (want een échte jas heb ik niet en past ook niet meer op mijn bagagestapel).
Goed, even doorbijten, op de bus en naar het hostel. Nu eerst eten! Ik moet even wennen aan dit geld, de Nieuw Zeelandse dollar is minder waard dan de Australische, maar in mijn ogen ziet alles er nog superduur uit! Ik ben weer op het backpackers pasta dieet en heb samen met mijn kamergenoot genoeg gekookt voor 2 dagen. Tussendoor snack ik op wortels en appels, ik denk heus wel aan gezond eten!
In Christchurch heb ik een middag doorgebracht om de meest dure anti-baby-pil (volgens mijn kamergenoot) te kopen. Helaas was mijn met pillen volgestouwde toilettas niet genoeg, dus ik mag de Nieuw Zeelandse gezondheidszorg in! Apotheek 1 stuurt me naar apotheek 2, apotheek 2 stuurt me naar dokter 1, dokter 1 stuurt me naar dokter 2 en daar krijg ik eindelijk een afspraak om een recept te krijgen. Een kort consult en een smak geld later en ik loop de apotheek weer uit met mijn voorraad "bescherming". Maar goed, goedkoper dan een baby, aldus de dokter!
Ik heb twee vrije dagen hier, maar ik kom er al gauw achter dat Christchurch niet zo spannend is. Tijd voor een dagtripje dus... en wat kan ik anders doen dan een Lord of the Rings tour in Nieuw Zeeland? Ja, ik ben een nerd en ik ben er trots op! Ik ga gewoon lekker met een bus langs de prachtige filmlocaties, rondzwaaiend met zwaarden uit de film, natuurlijk mijn replica van "de ring" dragend... gewoon omdat ik dat leuk vind!
Een beetje jammer dat daar in de bergen het weer nogal om kan slaan, want de bergen konden we niet eens zien door alle wolken. Wind en regen slaan tegen mijn poncho, die zover omhoog blaast dat het eigenlijk geen effect meer heeft. De laagjes die ik eronder draag doen niet heel veel voor warmte in die nattigheid dus ik kruip lekker de bus weer in... en het begint zowaar te sneeuwen! Maar dat is geen probleem want de chauffeur weet ons te entertainen met video's en verhalen over zijn tijd als geluidsman op de set van de films. De dag wordt onderbroken met een heerlijke lunch met bubbeltjes wijn, dus schenk maar vol die glazen!
Uiteindelijk stap ik op de Stray bus, die me langs allerlei plaatsen op het Noord en Zuidereiland zal rondleiden. Eerste stop: Kaikoura, de nummer 1 plek ter wereld om walvissen te spotten. Nou, niet dus... de zee is te ruw en de boot vaart niet. In plaats daarvan doe ik een kustwandeling van 2,5 uur. Ook leuk, maar ik zal het met een groep zeehonden en een zeeolifant moeten doen, want de volgende ochtend staat onze bus alweer klaar om ons af te zetten op de volgende locatie. Gelukkig kom ik op de terugweg nog langs Kaikoura en kan ik de tour gewoon nog eens proberen.
De volgende dagen doe ik voornamelijk veel wandelingen in Picton en het Abel Tasman National Park. Heuvels, regenwoud, gouden stranden en prachtige rotspartijen weten het spectaculaire uitzicht telkens weer te veranderen. Nieuw Zeeland stelt niet teleur, het landschap is net als op films en foto's, nog beter dan een ansichtkaart. Mijn wandelschoenen hebben er weer vele kilometers op zitten, mijn bilspieren zijn weer getraind en met het weer hebben we mazzel, drie prachtige zonnige dagen achter elkaar (nog steeds wel fris hoor!).
Onze Stray buschauffeur is chefkok, dus we krijgen een heerlijke avondmaaltijd voorgeschoteld bij aankomst in het national park. De komende week reis ik met hem mee, dus dat belooft veel goeds! Mijn route brengt me eerst verder naar het koude zuiden, dus verwacht volgende keer een ijzig verhaal!

It's so cold here! I should have known, I've been checking the weather reports and witnessed in agony how they dared to describe 6-10 degrees in Christchurch. Uhm, that's at least 20 degrees colder than I've been used to during the last year! I hope I can layer up well enough to stay warm (because I didn't bring a real jacket and honestly I have no room to carry it around either).
Right, let's do this, hop on the bus from the airport and straight to the hostel. Food first! I need to get used to this money, NZD is worth less than AUD and in my eyes everything seems super expensive! Back on the backpacker noodlediet, I cooked enough food for two days with my roommate. In between I snack on apples and carrots, I do think of healthy food, don't worry!
In Christchurch I spent almost a full day getting the most expensive anti-baby-pill (as my roommate calls it) ever. I stuffed my bag with pills before I left holland, but sadly I didn't have enough. So I got to go into New Zealand healthcare! Pharmacy 1 sends me to pharmacy 2, pharmacy 2 sends me to doctor 1, doctor 1 sends me to doctor 2 and there I can finally make an appointment to get a prescription. A short consult and a whole lot of money later, I walk out of the pharmacy with my bag of "protection". But, as the doctor said, cheaper than a baby!
I have two days off in this town, but I soon find out that Christchurch isn't very exciting. Time to plan a daytrip... what else than a Lord of the Rings tour in New Zealand? Yes, I'm a geek and proud of it! I have fun visiting the beautiful filminglocations, swinging around swords and axes from the movies, all the while wearing my replica of 'The One Ring'... just because I can!
It's a shame the weather can change so dramatically up in the mountains, because we couldn't even see the mountains through all the clouds. Wind and rain bash against my poncho, which blows up so far that it basically has no use wearing it. My layers underneath don't really work to keep me warm, soaked in all the rain, so I'm jumping back in the car... just as it starts snowing! Not a problem, the busdriver knows how to entertain us with video's and stories about his time as soundguy on the moviesets. The day is completed with a nice lunch with sparkling wine, so fill up those glasses!
Eventually I hop on the Straybus, which will take me past all these differents spots on the North and South Islands. First stop: Kaikoura, the number 1 spot in the world to see whales. Yeah, but not today... the sea is too rough so the boats aren't going out. In stead I do a nice coastal walk of 2.5 hours. Nice, but in stead of whales I'll have to be happy with a furseal colony, because the next morning the bus is ready to bring us to our next destination. Luckily I'm crossing Kaikoura again on the way up north, so I can try the whaletour again.
The next days I spend doing hikes in Picton/Marlborough Sounds and the Abel Tasman National Park. Hills, rainforest, pinetrees, golden beaches and stunning rockformations give the spectacular view a new twist around every corner. New Zealand doesn't disappoint, the landscape is just as in movies and pictures, better than a postcard. My hikingboots have done a lot of kilometers again and my buttmuscles have had their excersize again. We're lucky with the weather, three beautifull sunny (but still cold) days in a row.
Our Straybusdriver used to be a chef, so on arrival in the national park he's prepared us a delicious meal. The next week I'll be traveling with him, so that sounds good to me! My schedule brings me down to the cold south first, so expect an icy story next time!

Hoi Maris, dat zal zeker tegenvallen 20graden minder maar gelukkig zit je veel in de bus. Fijn dat het niet tegen valt, want dat zou zonde zij n en een paar stevige bilspieren is toch maar mooi meegenomen.Mariska gemiet nog lekker even en de groetjes van ons hier Doei.
